The KLU-ISS 2022 aims to introduce the new scientific and innovative research perspectives in the field of "sustainable logistics initiative" to early career researchers (Ph.D. candidates and post-doctoral researchers). The KLU-ISS 2022 by fulfilling this overall ambition empowers its participants with new ideas and cutting-edge research perspectives to step in several untapped aligned discussions, which have not yet been addressed appropriately. The summer school specifically focuses on the current socio-political changes and challenges including sustainable development, climate change, commodity logistics and logistics optimization from a European and Latin American perspective, exemplary taking into account the countries of Germany and Colombia. The KLU-ISS 2022 is also keen to look at “Market Sustainability Assessment”, “E-Freight”, “Co-modality" and "Urban Freight Transportation" as other interesting potential topics to pick one or two to explore during the summer school.
The KLU-ISS 2022 will take place in Hamburg/Germany from March 21st to March 25th and will meet new challenges from different societal perspectives, with the dialogue of German, International and Latin American researchers on and with an analysis of traditional and new natural resources and logistics chains under sustainability aspects. In addition to the actual lecture, doctoral and postdoctoral students are given the opportunity to present and discuss their research in the respective subject areas. The participants will work on a case study in small groups previous and during the summer school and present their results at the end. The KLU-ISS 2022 combines different workshop methods, lectures, case studies, roundtables, small group work, project work and logistics chain analyses.

Conditions for applicants*
- Finished Master´s degree or PhD
- Currently employed at University or Research Institute
- The organizer will pay travel (economy class) and accommodation
- Available scholarships: 15 Latin America and the Caribbean, 5 Germany, 5 other regions
*Please note: Scholarship up to 1800 EUR. Once the participant has been accepted for the scholarship, the participant is responsible for the booking of flights and accommodation. The participant must hand out all the bills to KLU (and participate in the summer school) for the reimbursement of the expenses after the event. The scholarship covers flights, accommodation, and subsistence under German Regulation.

Lecture topics
The lecturers discuss the need for rethinking trade and globalization if the world is to be led towards sustainable development. Further, the lecturers evaluate the challenges of the different pathways and perspectives of development from Latin America and Germany, and how this affects implementation of sustainability principles in the public and private sector.
The lecturers relate to the discussion of sustainability in the logistics sector between standard compliance and transitions towards sectoral and integrated sustainability. The lecturers discuss the economic, social, and environmental spheres of sustainability as well as trade-offs and conflicts in the implementation of sustainability criteria and strategies. The lecturers give concrete examples of best and worst practice from the port, maritime and logistics sector on how companies implement such strategies.
The lecturers relate to the discussion in how far the recent pandemic as well as changes in the geopolitical environment will impact on the fragmentation of supply chains and their possible restructuring.
Commodities still represent the greatest volume in Latin American and Colombian trade. This dependency on natural resources has been a challenge for Latin American regions. The exploitation of natural resources and the volatility of prices has created important discussions on the sustainability of existing models, the fiscal dependency of countries, the restriction/dedication of specific infrastructures to a limited number of products and the need to develop new value chains for these commodities in the countries of origin. The lecturers address the functioning of commodity logistics, actor networks and traditional and emerging business models in specific commodity sectors and related service logistics.
The lecturers present optimization models and challenges for different logistics changes with specific emphasis on new and emerging supply chains, such as cool logistics and last-mile logistics. The lecturers contrast possible solutions and implementation strategies between Germany/Europe and Latin America/Colombia.
Sitting with representatives of the private sector to interchange the academic and professional knowledge around:
- Emerging challenges and opportunities for sustainability from digitalization, addressing the convergence and divergence of global supply chain strategies in differing economic contexts.
- Discussion among German and Latin American researchers and stakeholder from the public and private sector.
