German University Championships: Gold and Bronze for KLU Students

This year, for the first time KLU took part in the German University Golf Championships, sending three students into the running – and racking up impressive scores. Tom Schmanns took home gold in the singles competition and, together with Maxi Breuell and Bennet Krüger, bronze in the team competition.

It was a nail-biter right up to the end. After 18 holes, there were three players tied for first place in the men’s singles competition. In the second round, which, due to thick fog, was shortened to nine holes, it came down to the very last hole played – and a win for Tom Schmanns (you can see the winning stroke in this video). He finished at three under par and one stroke ahead of Laurenz Baumgart (TUM) and Moritz Krug (DSHK), who tied for silver. With this score, Schmanns, now officially Germany University Champion, also qualified for the next World University Championship Golf, which will be in Turin in July 2022.

Schmanns’ outstanding performance and the solid seventh-place score from his teammate Maxi Breuell (winner in the category Longest Drive, i.e., the longest stroke of the day) paved the way for bronze when it came to the team score. As such, the KLU team, rounded out by Bennet Krüger, can look back on a very successful weekend. At the award ceremony, Schmanns had the following to say: “To be honest, I never expected to be standing here at the end of the day” and expressed his thanks to the organizers and helpers on site, and for the great support provided by KLU, “…without which we never could have taken part.”

More than 40 students from 16 universities participated in the German Championships of the German University Sports Federation (ADH), which was hosted by the University Sports division of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences at Golfpark Idstein near Frankfurt.

Maxi Breuell, Bennet Krüger and Tom Schmanns are all Bachelor students in Business Administration at KLU, and all play for Treudelberg Golf Club. The club’s first men’s team, which Maxi and Tom also belong to, plays in the 2nd Bundesliga (2nd professional division). Through a tailor-made program, KLU supports top athletes who are preparing for their careers, helping them reconcile training, matches and their responsibilities as students.
