Award-winning Master’s thesis: Christoph Jochimsthal and the Internet of Things
KLU alumnus Christoph Jochimsthal was one of the award winners at the 2020 BVL Thesis Conference, thanks to his outstanding Master’s thesis on the Internet of Things at the automaker BMW. He also received the Audience Award for his presentation. As Academic Director of the Thesis Conference, KLU President Prof. Thomas Strothotte moderated the online event, intended as a lead-up to the 2020 German Logistics Congress, on October 2, 2020.
For his Master’s thesis, Christoph Jochimsthal worked closely with the Logistics and Value Stream Planning departments at the BMW locations in Munich and Regensburg. The aim of the thesis was to develop a concept that would allow employees to directly and conveniently interact with the autonomous transport systems that will be used in intralogistics at the plants in the future.
The road from KLU to BMW
The Master’s thesis “Internet of Things - An Integration Concept for Smart Wearables Interaction with Intralogistics Transportation Systems at the Example of a Premium Automotive Manufacturer” was supervised by Dr. André Ludwig, an Associate Professor of Computer Science in Logistics at KLU. The term “wearables” refers to small, networked computers that are worn on the body and are intended to support people in their everyday lives. Widely used wearables include smart watches, fitness wristbands and data glasses.
After completing his studies a year ago, the KLU alumnus joined BMW as a Logistics Planner in the Distribution Logistics department. He is now responsible for financial and volume planning, and for innovation integration concepts.
The German Logistics Association (Bundesvereinigung Logistik, BVL) has awarded the Thesis Award for outstanding Bachelor’s and Master’s theses since 2010. This year, 15 Bachelor’s and 30 Master’s theses were honored with the award. The Thesis Conference is the meeting place for young professionals in connection with the German Logistics Congress.
