Triumph in Bonn: Hamburger Polo Club Secures German Championship Title
Kühne Logistics University (KLU) warmly congratulates its sports scholarship holders on an outstanding achievement: last weekend, the men’s hockey team of Hamburger Polo Club (HPC) claimed the title at the German Championship (Final Four) in Bonn, securing the crown of German hockey for the first time in the club’s history.
In an exciting final, the Hamburg-based team demonstrated remarkable composure and technical excellence. Particularly encouraging from KLU’s perspective: three supported student-athletes—Justus Weigand, Paul Smith, and Johann Wehnert—were part of the championship squad. Justus Weigand and Paul Smith had a decisive impact on the final, both scoring in the 4–0 victory over Uhlenhorst Mülheim and making a significant contribution to HPC’s triumph.
With its elite sport support program, KLU aims to combine academic excellence with high-performance sport. “The German championship title of Hamburger Polo Club highlights how successfully this dual-career approach works in practice,” says Johannes Dietz, Sports Relations Manager at KLU. “Having three of our student-athletes on a German championship team—and two of them scoring in the final—makes us especially proud.” The performances of Weigand, Smith, and Wehnert are exemplary of the talent, dedication, and commitment within KLU’s student-athlete community.
Strong KLU Presence at the Final Four
Beyond HPC’s title win, KLU was prominently represented at this year’s Final Four in Bonn. Several additional sports scholarship holders reached the final stage of the German Championship with their teams but were eliminated in the semifinals:
- Katharina Bauer competed with the women’s team of Harvestehuder THC (HTHC).
- Franziska Wolff was part of the squad of Großflottbeker THGC (GTHGC).
- Jonas von Gersum played for the men’s team of HTHC.
The strong presence of KLU student-athletes in Germany’s top teams underlines the university’s role as a key partner in elite sport—particularly in Hamburg, a traditional hub for field hockey.
