KLU Welcome Week 2025

KLU’s annual Welcome Week got under way last Monday, providing new students from Germany and around the world the chance to orientate themselves with the university, its academic programs and student services. The week’s fun and informative activities allowed the approximately 160 bachelor and master students to network with fellow students, KLU alumni, and their professors, crafting new and lasting connections and friendships along the way.

A large group of people is gathered indoors, posing for a group photo. The picture is taken from above, showing many individuals looking up at the camera.

“My first impressions are really great,” enthuses Bachelor in Business Administration student Justus Wehnert, who’s just been to a “Pathway to Success” session run by KLU’s Career Services & Skills team.

“I really like the community here, everyone is very open, and there are great networking opportunities,” he says, mingling with classmates outside the university’s futuristic, golden egg-shaped auditorium.

The 19-year-old from Hamburg says he’s also impressed with the campus and its modern buildings. “It’s a great study environment and I’m looking forward to facing new challenges, especially the semester studying abroad KLU offers.”

Fun-packed, informative week

Around him, the campus’ sunlit lobby buzzes with new bachelor and master students sipping on drinks and snacking on sweet treats.

The Welcome Week’s diverse, engaging program includes sessions on IT and library services, student well-being and mental health, student clubs and learning what’s meant by “Operations Mindset”.

There are also a number of optional events sprinkled throughout the week, including “Thriving and Surviving in Germany” and an informal get together at a popular local brewery specializing in craft beer and pizza.

These events, which give students the opportunity to get to know one another and their environs better, continue over the coming weeks and feature trips to the Emigration and International Maritime museums, a “Sustainable Picknick” in the leafy Inselpark and volleyball in Hamburg’s lovely Stadtpark (City Park), as well as a barge trip around the harbor.

Great balance of study and social activities

Students Vincent Voigt and Mai Pham Ngoc, both 18 and from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, are about to head off to the “Code of Conduct: Successfully Studying and Working Together” session. Both say they’re relishing the vibrant, sociable atmosphere of the Welcome Week.

Mai, who’s more-or-less come straight from the airport to the event says she hasn’t had much of a chance to inform an impression of Hamburg, but what she’s seen so far, she’s liked.

“Hamburg is a very lively place and the people are friendly, and the services here are very nice.”

She also says she’s excited to start studying at KLU as it’s “a great place where I can balance my academic learning while picking up career skills and engaging in student activities.”

“Everyone at KLU is very helpful,” agrees Vincent, who, like Mai, is doing his BSc in Business Administration. “If you ask them something, they immediately tell you and that made me feel really welcomed here.”

He says that having read about KLU, its program and classes online, he decided to do his bachelor’s degree here. “I realized KLU has a very nice community, and as I really like business and logistics, it would be a great place to study.”

Lifelong connections

Chatting amiably with a group of classmates, Master in Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management student Jitesh Gharat, says he chose KLU because of his longstanding in interest in logistics.

“I’m from a shipping and logistics background,” the 24-year-old from Mumbai explains. “I did my bachelor’s in Nautical Science, which is related to the merchant navy and my father used to work in a terminal. So, since I was a child, I was fond of maritime logistics. I wanted to learn more about the subject and was looking at universities focus on logistics and supply chain management, and KLU stood out for me.”

Jitesh says that after finishing his master’s, he’d like to work in a manufacturing company, leading a management team or being a logistics coordinator working in core logistics.

That, of course, is still a few years away. In the meantime, he says, he’s looking forward to his course and getting to know more of his classmates.

“Everyone I’ve met so far here has been good,” he says. “There’s a mixture of culture here, people from all over the globe, from India, Europe, China, and everyone is really friendly.
