From Campus to Bike Racing: KLU Doctoral Students Conquer the Nordic Chase Ultra Race
The Nordic Chase Ultra Race is a new challenge in ultra-cycling. Participants ride almost nonstop through Denmark, across Sweden, and on to Norway, relying on their own strategy, endurance, and mental strength. Joining the race in 2026: two doctoral students from Kühne Logistics University (KLU).

Two days, five hours, 726 kilometers, and 5,200 meters of elevation gain—that’s the tally for Jonah Blits and Ramón van Almsick after their successful participation in the Nordic Chase Ultra Race. With little sleep and passing through breathtaking landscapes, they made their way from Copenhagen to Oslo.
Nordic Chase Ultra Race: Endurance and Resilience Required
Supported by Kühne Logistics University, the two researchers took to the starting line and applied their “operations mindset” directly to the race. In an ultra race, precise planning of time and resources is just as essential as physical fitness. On the bike, this means carrying as little extra weight as possible, making strategic stops, and managing resources carefully.
Jonah conducts research at KLU on environmental policy measures to reduce packaging waste and promote reusable systems. Ramón focuses on market-based mechanisms for reducing emissions in freight transport supply chains.
Parallels Between Ultra Races and Pursuing a PhD
Despite all the preparation, the race was above all a mental challenge. Looking back, Jonah draws parallels between the ultra race and pursuing a PhD: “Even though the goal was clear, at some point late at night on the course, you realize just how long the journey really is. I see many parallels there with a PhD: The journey is long and marked by uncertainties and challenges. In the end, it’s all about perseverance and mutual motivation—a positive mindset and good spirits—that keep you going time and time again.”
In addition to Jonah and Ramón, Prof. Dr. Moritz Petersen from KLU also took on the challenge. He was well on his way to Oslo, but had to end the race early due to a mechanical failure on his bike. Even though he was unable to finish, his participation underscores the special importance that athletic challenges and personal ambition hold at KLU.
Team spirit, resilience, and strategic thinking
These achievements demonstrate how closely science, sports, and personal development can be intertwined. At KLU, we view sports as an important part of campus life and encourage our students and researchers to combine academic excellence with their individual passions. Jonah and Ramón’s adventure is a striking example of how team spirit, resilience, and strategic thinking—qualities that are crucial in research—can contribute to success far beyond the campus.
